Stanford Wong Flunks Big-Time - A Review

The book I am reading is called Stanford Wong Flunks Big-Time, by Lisa Yee. It is about a boy named Stanford Wong who has made the A-Team at his middle school. At the same time, he has flunked his English class by getting an F on his final book report. His dad, who is academically obsessed, tells him he'll have to trade his basketball summer camp-manned by Alan Scott, one of the best basketball players in the world- for summer school. He invents an alter ego for himself while at summer school: SSSSpy(Super Stealth Stanford Spy). He nicknames his English teacher Teacher Torturer. His real name is Mr. Glick. He frantically comes up with a hilarious plan to keep his friends from finding out about summer school and the F.

Meanwhile, his grandmother, Yin-Yin, is growing a bit senile. She does crazy things like taking walks and forgetting where she lives. His parents are arguing whether or not they should send her to a home for old people called Vacation Village. Stanford overhears and thinks that they have to wait for someone to die so that there is an opening.

More problems appear. His enemy, geek genius Millicent Min, (12-year old girl in high school) has been hired to tutor him. Over the phone, she tells him the following: "Listen, Stan-turd, this is not my idea of an ideal summer. In fact, it is worse than getting gout, failing the GRE, and being passed over for graduate school during a meteor shower without a telescope."

He meets a girl named Emily Ebers. He thinks that she is pretty. Well, it just happens that Emily is a friend of Millicent. More complications! He and Millicent devise a plan to keep Emily from knowing about Stanford and English class, and Millicent and high school. Instead, one of Stanford's friends, named Digger, somehow finds out that Stanford is going to summer school. He blackmails Stanford into letting him beat him on the basketball court. Then they all go to the fair. It turns out that Digger betted the Roadrunners (Stanford's basketball team) ten bucks to see if he could dance with Millicent. He couldn't, so he made fun of Millicent. Stanford stands up for her and chases Digger off. Then they all make it up to each other. After that, Stanford gets a C+ on his final exam and passes.

I liked this book because there was lots of action and humor in it. My rating for this book out of 5 would have been a 5. I hope you read this book and enjoy it as much as I did! There are two other books in this series: Millicent Min: Girl Genius, and So Totally Emily Ebers.
